Overdue? I think so!
1/30/12 by BenTheHobo
I've had so much going on in my life and I haven't bothered to get on here and provide anyone with anything in quite some time. (Dearly missed, I know)
Anyway, I graduated Police Foundations at Durham College last April, so the education is done for now.
I bought myself a 2008 F150 in August. Its an awesome truck, I love driving it, but as a (now) 21 year old driver with two previous tickets driving a new(ish) vehicle my insurance premium is pretty high. Like 560 a month high. Insurance companies are no fun. So I'm paying 560 a month to insure it, 300 a month on payments for the truck itself, plus 300 a month to keep the 150L gas tank full.
My poor math skills make that about 1200 a month, just on my truck.
Now that I'm done school, I have to start paying back my student loans. Add 200 a month to the 1200.
For someone that makes less than 20,000 a year, 1400 a month is A LOT of money.
I'm lucky, I still live at home, and my parents pay for my cell phone bills.
Its no wonder its so hard to make a start after school. I'm 27k in debt for school, and 20k in debt for my truck. Its hard not to get buried in debt when people fresh out of college can not find meaningful employment.
I lucked out because while I was at school I got my Ontario Security License and now I do security at Blue Mountain Resort.
While its not a high paying job (under 20,000 remember) I'm atleast getting experience relating to my future career path.
In Canada, police forces will usually not hire people under 25 due to the lack of "life experience"
Knowing this, I attempted to enlist as a Military Police officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, cause I mean, what a place to get "experience". Even the MP's shut me down due to a lack of experience.
How am I to get life experience if no one is willing to take a chance on young people fresh out of college?
Like I said, I lucked out and now when I begin applying to police forces in April (not Peel Region, I refuse to work with cowboys) I'll be able to bring all this experience to the table.
But its not that way for everyone, which I think is ridiculous. Its no wonder people don't go take secondary education. I got off light with my debt load, but I could see why people would avoid the mountain of debt in order to get the paper that is not a guaranteed job, unlike what some people would have you believe.
The system forces young people to take on debt far beyond their means. That's how debt and credit crises happen. But no one cares because the companies know one way or another they'll be paid.
Kinda makes me think is all.
That was a lot of typing holy crap.
Also I'm going to a job fair at the Air Canada Center in Toronto tomorrow, they're hiring security and I think it'd be way too cool to work for Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment. Doing security at a Maple Leafs game, or a sweet concert? Count me in!
